The Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) is a high-stakes, state-level entrance examination conducted annually by Anna University, Chennai, on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Historically, the TANCET Examination also covered M.E., M.Tech, and M.Arch programs, though these are now primarily processed through the CEETA-PG stream. As a paper-based test (PBT), it evaluates thousands of aspirants each year on their analytical, quantitative, and verbal proficiency, ensuring a merit-based selection process for the state’s most prestigious technical and management institutions.

The eligibility for TANCET exam generally requires a recognized Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% aggregate marks, while a 5% relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories (SC/ SCA/ ST). The exam structure is meticulously designed to assess academic readiness, featuring 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed within a strict two-hour duration. For MBA aspirants, the syllabus focuses on five key areas: Data Analysis, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Sufficiency, and General English. A notable feature of the marking scheme is the inclusion of negative marking, where 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect response, demanding a high level of accuracy from candidates. Following the exam, successful students participate in a centralized counseling process organized by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Chennai, to secure their seats.

TANCET Mode of Exam

TANCET is conducted in an offline Paper-Based Test (PBT) mode. Candidates answer questions on an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet using a black ballpoint pen only. The exam is conducted within a 120 minute span of time, comprising 100 Multiple Choice Questions. The format itself is a test of speed that assesses how effectively candidates manage their time.

TANCET Languages

TANCET is conducted exclusively in English. The question paper, instructions, and all sections are set and answered entirely in English. There is no option for candidates to appear in any regional or/ alternative language medium.
